Northwards in the news

Beating crime - local people lap it up!

Local people in Newton Heath turned out in force to enjoy a fun day out - while learning more about crime-cracking initiatives in their area.

The event, on Saturday 3 November 2007, was organised by the Local Action Partnership (LAP). This is a group of organisations that teamed up to help make this part of Manchester a better and safer place to live by promoting new ways to prevent crime, tackle antisocial behaviour and promote safety.

We play a vital role in LAP - working alongside the police, the city council, community groups and other organisations that have an interest in the area.

Lots to see and do

The event at the Sure Start centre on Great Newton Street was a great way to promote the work of LAP and get local people involved. There was lots to see and do - including a police dog show. And the scrumptious healthy snacks provided by Sure Start went down a treat!

Lots of people made a beeline for the Northwards stall to find out how we're helping tackle crime and antisocial behaviour on the streets of Newton Heath. Children loved the Northwards cardboard house - they couldn't wait to write comments about their home and environment on its walls.

Community spirit

And there was an opportunity for the grown-ups to have their say too; the 'Getting to know the people of north Manchester' questionnaire offered a big prize draw and the chance for people to say what they do and don't like about where they live. Many highlighted the area's community spirit as a real plus-point. And they all agreed that a safe home, a clean safe neighbourhood, and facilities for young people, were really important.

LAP - with Northwards playing a big part - is helping meet these aspirations.
