Hundreds of pounds have been raised for wounded British troops thanks to Northwards’ sporty staff and terrific tenants at Edward Grant Court in Harpurhey.

Through a fundraising footy match and the residents’ own raffles, they raised a total of £626 for Help for Heroes. Denise Mellor, the charity’s County Volunteer in Manchester, received the funds in a special presentation at the Court last Friday (20 August). The cheque was handed over by Wendy Theaker, Edward Grant Scheme Manager, and resident Bob Coverdale, 88, himself a veteran of the Second World War.

A Goal-fest!

Northwards’ Retirement Scheme Managers emerged victorious when they took on the Northwards Mobile Cleaning Team in the charity football match this July. The game was a 6 – 5 thriller, and as the goal-fest took place at Edward Grant Court, residents at the Hemsley Street retirement scheme got to choose which charity the match would raise money for. They picked Help for Heroes, which supports wounded servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pat Scappaticci, Head of Retirement Housing and Caretaking Services at Northwards said: “A big thumbs up to Northwards staff, our partner agencies and residents for their generous support in our efforts to raise funds for Help for Heroes.

“Our donation will go towards provision of services and facilities that will help wounded soldiers into the next phase of their lives. There's a massive amount of work to do, but the donation will help to make that happen.”
