Keeping dogs

Who can keep a dog?

You can keep a dog unless:

  • you live in a multi storey block or
  • you get to your home through an entrance shared with other tenants and there is a 'no dog' agreement between all the tenants and Northwards Housing (the agreement may have been made originally with the City Council - it is still valid)
Keeping a dog responsibly

Even if you are allowed to keep a dog in your home, it must not annoy other people - for example by barking or being aggressive. And the dog must not be allowed to destroy any part of the property.

You must clear up any mess - especially in communal areas or in public places. You can be fined up to £1,000 if your dog fouls public land. Not knowing the dog has fouled, or not having anything to clear it is not a defence. Manchester City Council even provides free poop-scoops.

If a tenant doesn't keep to these basic rules they are breaking their tenancy agreement - we could ask them to get rid of the animal, or risk legal action for anti-social behaviour.
