Hints and tips on completing your job application form

These notes give you important advice on completing your application form.

The decision to invite you for interview is based entirely on the information you give on your application form, so it’s really important!

Within the job advert you will find the job description and person specification; you should read this carefully as this information will help you to decide if you want to apply for the job.

  • The job description gives you details about the job and lists all the main tasks and duties that you will be required to carry out.
  • The person specification lists the knowledge, skills, qualifications and personal qualities needed to do the job. Within your application, you must demonstrate how you are able to meet the person specification.

If you are applying for more than one job, please note you will need to complete a separate application form for each job. Each application should be specific to the role you are applying for – this will give you a better chance at being invited to interview.

We want our application process to be as fair as possible and therefore request that everyone completes our short on-line application form to ensure consistency and also to attach an up-to-date CV.

Please remember to complete the Equality Opportunities details - the information that you give us on this form will be used to gather statistics to ensure applicants are not being discriminated against during the recruitment and selection process. It will not be used for any other purpose.

These details will be separated from your application as soon as it is received and it will not be passed on to anyone involved in short-listing or interviewing for the post for which you are applying.

Post applied for

We advertise different types of posts: full time, part time, permanent positions or fixed term contracts for a specific duration.

Contact details

Give your full name, address, postcode and telephone number and e-mail address on the application form. These are important!

Assessment centre

As part on the interview process, you may be required to attend an assessment. This enables us to assess you working within a group and how you interact with the rest of the candidates.

For some roles you may be required to sit a short test. This may be job specific i.e. prioritising workload or scenario based questions linked to the role you are applying for. If any testing is involved, you will be advised at interview stage.

People with disabilities

Northwards values the benefits of a diverse workforce and are a positive employer of disabled people. We welcome applications from disabled people and are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments that may be required throughout the recruitment and selection process. In line with commitments, we have a guaranteed interview scheme and offer interviews to any disabled person who meets the criteria as detailed on the person specification.

Application form questions

Why do you think you would be a great addition to the Northwards team?

You must use this question to tell us about your suitability for the role, so please make sure that your application shows clearly how you meet each item of the person specification: we can only shortlist you for interview if you show that you meet these requirements by providing examples of your experience where you can. This is a very important part of your application form as it gives you the opportunity to tell us why you think you can do the job and allows the shortlisting panel to clearly judge whether or not you have met the requirements of the person specification.

Do not repeat your career history, use only the relevant examples. Use each item on the specification as a heading and give examples to show how or what you've done meets this item. For example, if the person specification asks you to be able to communicate effectively with customers, you might want to describe the different types of customers you have communicated with and how.

Think carefully about what you have done in the past, at home, school, and leisure, paid or unpaid employment. Be specific about your skills and specify your own responsibilities but remember that your skills, knowledge and experience do not have to come from paid work. Interview panels are just as interested in experience gained outside of work.

Remember, you will only be invited to interview if you show that you meet all the items on the person specification.

Tell us about a time when you provided a brilliant service: do you share our values and demonstrate competencies?

At Northwards, we live by our “values” which help us to create a positive culture. This question is an opportunity for you to tell us how you demonstrate a positive attitude. Think about what you’ve done in the past at home, school, leisure, paid or unpaid employment and provide us with a great example.

Your CV

On your CV please give us details of:

  • Current/most recent employment or voluntary work - If you are employed, please give details about your present job.
  • Previous employment or voluntary work - Please give details of all your previous jobs since leaving school/college, in date order, starting with the most recent. Any gaps in your employment history need to be explained.
  • Personal development - Give details of your education, qualifications and training. Include all your qualifications and any training and short courses you have attended or are completing at present.
  • References - Your first referee should be your present employer or, if you are not employed at present, your last employer, or if you are a student, your course tutor / teacher. Your referees should, where possible, be people who are able to give information about your ability to do the job for which you are applying.

Check that you have answered all the questions, attached your CV and submit!

All successful candidates will be invited to interview by email, so please make sure that you check your inbox regularly. If you are invited to an interview, please confirm your attendance either by email or telephone.

Upon submission, all applications receive an automated response on screen which explains that if you do not hear from us within two weeks of the closing date, you have been unsuccessful.
