The Sikh religion was founded by Guru Nanak Dev, who was born in the Punjab province of India in 1469.

Guru Nanak spread a message of fatherhood of God and brotherhood of mankind. Basic Sikh beliefs are:

  • one God
  • live in the world to achieve Him through meditation (Naam Simran)
  • keep God in heart and mind at all times
  • live honestly, work hard, be generous to the less fortunate
  • treat everyone equally
  • serve others by sharing and caring

The 11th and final Guru, Guru Granth Sahib, contains teachings of all the Sikh Gurus as well as many Hindu, Muslim and low caste holy saints.

The Sikh place of worship is called a Gurdwara.

Each Gurdwara has a langar (free kitchen) which is an important part of community life.

Festivals
  • Diwali - Festival of Lights celebrates the release from prison of sixth Guru, Hargobind Singh
  • Gurpurbs festivals associated with the lives of the Gurus
  • Vaisakhi Sikh New Year. Also celebrates the founding of the Khalsa by 10th Guru, Gobind Singh
