The word Shinto means "Way of the Gods". It is the traditional and ancient religion of Japanese people.
Shinto does not have a founder but teaches important ethical principles.
There are two holy texts which are called the Kajiki and the Nihon-gi. These contain compilations of ancient myths and traditional teachings.
Shinto is based on belief in, and worship of, kami. The best English translation is that kami are spirits but kami is a complex concept and kami can also be elements of the landscape or forces of nature.
Shintoists worship kami for their spirituality and pray to them for blessings and grace. Shintoists worship at shrines in temples or at home.
