Charlestown is about five miles north of the city centre, on the south side of Victoria Avenue, next to Boggart Hole Clough. It is close to the M60 motorway round Manchester - so there's good access to other parts of the city and the north west.
Charlestown is mostly a residential area, but there is a small parade of shops on Charlestown Road - including a post office and citizen's advice bureau. There's a health centre there too. There is another shopping parade on Victoria Avenue/Hollinwood Avenue, and more shops, including a supermarket on the Rochdale Road/Victoria Avenue crossroads less than a mile away. There are regular buses along Victoria Avenue, and Rochdale Road to the city centre, Middleton (where there are more shops and local facilities) and all the leisure and sporting activities at Heaton Park.
Boggart Hole Clough is a big local attraction. It's one of Manchester's largest parks, with bowls, fishing, boating, football pitches, playground, running track, multicourts and woodland walks.
