Standards we meet

The Northwards standard: our promise

Massive spending on Northwards homes started in Summer 2006. Every tenant will enjoy a share of our £130 million home improvement programme.

We will meet the government's Decent Homes standards - but will go much further than this. Our own, higher standards are based on the promises we made to every tenant when we took over from Manchester City Council in December 2005.

So you and your neighbours will get:

  1. uPVC double-glazing on all your single-glazed windows - except in 'listed' buildings like Victoria Square (we will use wooden frames in conservation areas)
  2. the choice of a brand new kitchen OR a brand new bathroom (if it is at least five years old*)
  3. any repairs and improvements needed to bring your home up to the 'Decent Homes standard'.
  4. the benefit of huge improvements to the local environment - things like lighting and security, boundaries around homes, open spaces and the foyers of multi-storey blocks.

As well as these four key promises, we'll make sure that:

  • all electric rewiring includes mains-powered smoke alarms to make homes safer
  • multi-storey blocks without CCTV security cameras will get them, and all blocks will be linked to a security control room
  • contractors doing the work for Northwards meet our high standards - standards that tenants helped to set.

With around 13,000 homes to improve, we're going to be busy until 2011. But we're not hanging around. See 'what we have done so far'. Find out where your home fits in - go to our online list of home improvements.

A better place to live

The Northwards spending power will make a vital contribution to a better North Manchester. The area is already on the up, with fantastic new shopping and leisure facilities. The extra spending on our estates will make your community stronger and attract new people and new money to the area.

*This promise was made in 2005. Therefore, you're current kitchen or bathroom must have been fitted before December 2000 to be eligible.
