Wardens clean up!

Wardens patrolling the area

For people living in Harpurhey, Miles Platting, Newton Heath, Ancoats and Moston - it's not unusual to see the Northwards Wardens doing the rounds. They patrol the streets in their red jackets, keeping their eye on the area - twelve hours a day, six days a week.

Warden Manager, Tony Dalton says, "We're all about keeping the areas as clean and safe as possible. We listen to residents' needs and we act as a voice for people round here." Until now, the Wardens haven't had any legal powers to deal with anti-social behaviour, such as litter dropping, rubbish dumping and dog fouling. But last week, every Northwards Neighbourhood Warden had official training from the Street Environment team at the council - giving them the authority to give 'fixed penalty notices' (FPNs) to people who do these kinds of crimes.

Outside of the city centre, they're the first warden scheme in Manchester to have the right to use these legal powers.

Tony says, "We've been looking forward to this for a while now - and pleased that we have the authority to deal with these crimes head-on. Our training focused on the quality of FPNs and we're keen to deal with persistent offenders properly."

Northwards Housing Chair, Ade Alao said, "This is great news for us and for all the law abiding tenants in these areas. These small victories go a long way in making north Manchester a safer place to live."

A final word of warning to rubbish dumpers, litter louts and dog-owners that don't clean up - you'll have to cough up £50 within 14 days of receiving a fixed penalty notice.
