Victoria Square, Manchester’s first social housing project is the subject of a new book, written by residents enjoying their retirement in this historic setting.
"Victoria Square - The Dwellings" is packed with photos, anecdotes, facts and stories about life in the Square throughout its history.
Victoria Square was built in 1894 to help clear slum residencies in Manchester. It is one of the most iconic buildings in Manchester’s history and is now a Grade 2 listed building with over 166 residents.
The exciting project was brought to life by Kim Wiltshire, who works for the health charity, Lime. Kim was working with residents at Victoria Square and was inspired by the enthusiasm they had for the building and its history.
With help from Barbara Pringle (Secretary of the Victoria Square Tenants Association) and Donna Ward (Northwards’ Scheme Manager at Victoria Square), residents secured an Arts Council Grant of £5,000 to help get the book published.
"Researching for the book was great fun," said Kim, "we ran storytelling and photography workshops, visited the Museum of Science and Industry and went to Central Library as well. We are really proud and think it’s a valuable and interesting document about an important part of Manchester’s history"
Barbara Pringle spoke of how happy they are with the results; "The book gives a wonderful insight in to the life and times of this incredible building. We’d like to thank all the residents who have helped make the project possible. Everyone involved has worked really hard and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome!"
Victoria Square ‘The Dwellings’ was launched at Victoria Square on Wednesday 17 December 2008 Manchester’s Lord Mayor Mavis Smitheman was there to say a few words of praise to all involved in the project.
