A turn up for the books

Turning Pages Book Club

A north Manchester book club enjoyed a real ‘turn up for the books’ recently after being nominated for a prestigious national award.

With encouragement from the National Institute for Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), the Turning Pages Book Club formed at Northwards’ George Halstead Court, in Crumpsall, to enjoy reading, socialising and keeping their brains active!

Now the club has been nominated for the Adult Learners’ Week ‘Group Award’ 2010. If they win, they’ll be invited down to the awards ceremony in London in May to receive a learning voucher, valued between £200 and £1,500.

The members put the club together in November 2009 after NIACE got in touch, offering helpful ideas on how to run a book club and £80 to spend on whatever books they fancied.

Since then, the group have got stuck into everything from biographies to murder-mysteries, taking enjoyment in the ‘Quick Reads’ series of books. ‘Quick Reads’ is a range of bite-sized novels by best-selling authors and celebrities designed for regular readers wanting a short, fast read, and for those who have lost the reading habit or find reading tough.

Club member Brian Williams said: “I was never a good reader, but by reading these ‘Quick Reads’ I’ve really got into it.”

“It’s just great fun getting together to read and discuss, but I joined to learn how to write a best-seller!” joked fellow member Barry Horrocks.
