Our older residents have been ‘making waves’ surfing the internet and getting to grips with all kinds of new technology as part of ‘Silver Surfers’ day.
This national event, held on 21 May each year, is part of a massive campaign to encourage older people to get comfortable using digital technology.
And two of our retirement schemes – Victoria Square, Ancoats and Apprentice Court, Harpurhey – got stuck in with fun training sessions on how to use PCs, digital cameras and even a Nintendo Wii.
The day was a big hit, with the Wii proving particularly popular – residents at Victoria Square were so ‘bowled over’ by the ten-pin bowling game that there was talk of starting a league with other retirement schemes!
Pat Scappaticci, Head of Retirement and Caretaking Services at Northwards, said: “The scheme managers and Amanda our caretaker work very hard promoting the wonders of the world wide web. We're delighted that so many residents attended the events and hope that they continue to get a lot of use out of the computers installed in their community lounges.
“Thanks to Digital Unite UK, who run the Silver Surfer campaign, for sponsoring the events and providing funding for the Wii and digital camera.”
