Top tips for a healthy life

Steve and friends
Health bunch: Steve and friends from George Halstead Court

Northwards health trainer Steve Hoy is making a name for himself among our older residents.

Steve helps people over 60 (and some over 90!) to be more active, healthier, sleep better, and even socialise more.

He visits residents and talks through what they want to achieve. He helps them come up with an action plan to improve health and wellbeing. From advice on diets and giving up smoking, to joining classes and clubs for things like dance, Thai-chi, walking and cookery, local people have really felt the benefit of his expert advice.

Top diet tips

Gladys 87, from George Halstead Court, told us: "Steve said I drink too much tea! He told me to have a glass of water three times a day and some fruit. I'm sleeping better and feel much livelier too. He checks that I'm sticking to the plan... but sometimes I sneak a bacon buttie!"

Eighty year old Andrew is registered blind. Before Steve came along he didn't like leaving his room and had trouble sleeping. But some top diet tips and encouragement and practical help to walk round the estate made all the difference. "Now I feel fitter, happier and more independent. I owe it to Steve for helping me the way he did," Andrew says.

Get fitter

"You're never too old to enhance the quality of your life,"Steve points out. "Small changes over time have a major impact, helping maintain mobility and independence. I'm proud to help our residents lead healthier, happier lives."
