There was plenty of ‘juice loose aboot this hoose’ when Health Trainer Sheila Devereaux visited Apprentice Court in Harpurhey.

This was just one of our retirement housing schemes that the smooth operator visited to introduce residents to the smashing world of smoothies.

The vast majority at Apprentice Court had never even tried the fruity refreshments before, so Sheila was particularly eager to get the residents stuck in on the blenders and experimenting with ingredients to make their own mouth-watering mixtures.

As well as encouraging tenants to eat more fruit, the aims of the event were to introduce them to food that they may not have tried before, to help those who struggle to chew or swallow to include fruit into their diet more easily and to re-enforce the five-a-day message in a fun way.

Some residents had such a blast that they agreed to use their residents fund to purchase a smoothie maker to use in their communal kitchen!

Pat Scappaticci, Head of Retirement and Caretaking Services, said: “It was great that Sheila could come and show the residents a really fun and easy way of getting their five-a-day. Many said that they would now include ready-made smoothies in their weekly shop, and some of our schemes now offer smoothies as a healthy choice to tea and coffee on their daily coffee mornings.”
