Prize readers!
Left to right: Bailey O'Neil, Adam Daniel and Danny Duignan

Bailey O'Neil and Adam Daniel of Charlestown Primary School have been enjoying the benefits of the Northwards Literacy Mentoring Scheme, and even received some prizes for their achievements this week!

Our Health and Safety Co-ordinator Danny Duignan has been tutoring these boys once a week, over the last academic year. Part of the scheme's effectiveness is to support and praise progression of reading and understanding, and these boys were given some footy gifts by Northwards Housing for what they have achieved. They were really pleased with their gifts and even made Danny a card to thank him for his tutoring!

The scheme gives staff the chance to provide additional reading help to children in local primary schools, giving them the opportunity to develop and use literacy skills. It has given pupils across north Manchester the chance to have one-to-one dedicated reading time with a mentor, helping them to progress with confidence.

Satisfying work

Danny said “It’s very satisfying being a literacy mentor, particularly knowing how I can help the child’s development and enjoyment at school – I’ve really noticed the progression of Bailey and Adam over the last year.”
