Brand new council homes will be built in north Manchester for the first time in 24 years.
The £3.5million will pay for 32 bungalows in Higher Blackley and Charlestown, specially designed for our older residents. As well as meeting the accessibility and support needs of these residents, each home will be tailored to high environmental standards, to help significantly cut utility bills.
In a joint bid with Manchester City Council, we secured the £3.5million as part of a national competition, run by the Homes and Community Agency. The aim of this competition was to provide central government funding for councils to build social housing. We’re due to begin managing the work on these new homes next March. We’re expecting the first tenants to move in 2011.
Greig Lees, our Head of Regeneration, said: “The opportunity to develop new social rented housing in partnership with Manchester City Council is fantastic news for Northwards Housing. Developing new bungalows within existing communities gives us the opportunity to improve the housing offer to older residents by providing accessible homes, which are designed to reduce residents' fuel costs. This new development will in turn help free up much needed family accommodation for which there is significant demand.”
