Marlene Garnett, 56 year old mother of two and member of our Riverways Panel, has been awarded the first Manchester Evening News 'Mum of the Year'!
Ten years ago, she courageously stepped in to stop youngsters vandalising her car. The incident encouraged Marlene to talk to her neighbours about their community and how to make it a better place to live. She set up a Home Watch group and has been patrolling the streets as a community guardian ever since.
Her determination and spirit has really helped improve the quality of life in her neighbourhood.
Marlene set up an Eco Youth project to bring youngsters together and brighten the area with flowers and shrubs - the group has picked up two Britain in Bloom Neighbourhood awards and a silver medal at the Tatton Flower Show. She even finds the time to runs her local residents' association too!
Marlene, nominated for the award by her daughter Toni Baxter, has now been given the recognition she deserves for her fantastic hard work and successful involvement in her local community.
