Hundreds of youngsters from north Manchester have taken their place in the spotlight (or should that be floodlights?) at the City of Manchester Stadium to celebrate their fantastic work in the community.
The ‘Junior Wardens City Pride Awards’ saw over 240 of north Manchester’s most caring kids get the recognition they deserve. The Lord Mayor Alison Firth came down to thank the youngsters for their hard work, as did Chief Inspector Leon Jacobs from Greater Manchester Police.
Northwards Housing launched the Junior Wardens scheme in 2007 to encourage young people to take care of their local area and environment. Kitted out with uniforms and equipment by our adult Wardens, the young’uns patrol their schools, play areas and communities. They stay alert for hazards and problems, and help look after the environment by doing everything from carrying out litter picks to making sure paper isn’t wasted in the classroom. They visit retirement schemes across north Manchester to help tidy up the grounds, serve tea, coffee and biscuits and even act as bingo callers!
Since the project started, 23 schools have joined the scheme, and one special student from each school was named their ‘Junior Warden of the Year’ at the ceremony. One wonder-warden, Christopher Brookes from Moston Lane Primary School, was crowned the ‘Champion of Champions’ for always going the extra mile. The ten-year-old is so dedicated to safety, he even wrote a letter to the council persuading them to put up a banner in front of the school’s nursery to warn parents not to park on the zig-zagged lines!
Judy Kerton, headteacher at the school said: “We’re so proud of all our Junior Wardens. They do an amazing job as our environmental champions, keeping our school and community safe and secure.”
Well done to all the Junior Wardens and a big thank you to Manchester City Football Club, Eastlands Asda, The Manchester Communication Academy and MCC who all sponsored the event, and volunteers from V Involved who helped out on the day.
