Earlier this month, friends and family gathered to celebrate the unveiling of a very special new street in Newton Heath.
Named in honour of community champion Ivy Graham, who passed away in February 2008, ‘Ivy Graham Close’ now stands off Oldham Road as a lasting tribute to a lady who had a massive impact on her surroundings.
Not only was Ivy a member of our Riverways Area Panel, she also founded the Heathfield Health Group, the Troydale Tenants and Residents Group and the Briscoe Lane Youth and Community Centre, where she tirelessly campaigned for facilities for young people.
It was Christine Carroll, former ward councillor for Miles Platting and Newton Heath, who suggested that the street within McInerney Homes’ new Zest development, near Dean Lane, be named after her.
The opening ceremony was a heartwarming affair, with smiles all around. Ivy’s son Frank led the tributes to his mum as the sun burst through the grey Autumn skies. It was a fitting celebration of a lady who’s truly left her mark on the city.
