The Green Team

There’s a new bunch of truly ‘green’ eco-warriors in town - they’re not just environmentally friendly, they’re bloomin’ young too!

The ‘Green Team’ is a youth project we helped to set up in the Waterloo Road/Elizabeth Street area of Cheetham to encourage 4-12 year olds to make their community greener. For every environmental project they take part in, the kids earn credits towards rewards like free trips and vouchers.

So far, 24 youngsters have participated in two activities, doing a spot of bulb planting and making flower pots to give to older residents in the area. To say thank you, we took them to see a panto at the Manchester Opera House where they had allada-laughs watching Alladin! For some of the children, it was the first time they’d ever seen a panto!

The project - which Northwards runs with fellow housing groups “Johnnie” Johnson (who are the main funders), Arawak Walton and Tung Sing – has been such a hit that it has already been nominated for the TPAS (Tenant Participation Advisory Service) ‘Best Practice in Youth Involvement Award’, so fingers crossed!

Future activities possibly in the pipeline for the Green Team include making hanging baskets, litter picking and planting some giant tubs to brighten up the area.
