Billy's got designs on Northwards, 7 April 2006

Bill and his design

In February, Northwards Housing approached 12 primary schools in the north Manchester area, with a mission to get creative . . .

Ian Gillett, from Northwards neighbourhood warden scheme visited the schools to give them the challenge to create a design of a mouse mat for the organisation.

Ian said: "At the heart of it, Northwards' is all about doing good for north Manchester, so it seemed right to use the theme of 'What's good for our neighbourhood?'. The designs were great! I never realised just how talented our local children were."

The primary schools taking part in the competition were St Augustine's, Burgess Primary, Christ the King, Harpur Mount, Holy Trinity, Lily Lane, Moston Lane, Mount Carmel, St Dustan's, St Edmunds, Moston Fields and St Wilfred's

Over 100 of the children's designs were submitted to the judging panel, made up of Northwards tenants and staff. It was unanimously agreed that Billy Brien, aged 10, from Christ the King primary school in Newton Heath had designed the winning picture.

One of the judges, Karen Maguire said: "Billy's picture was so colourful and diverse and we loved the ideas he has for his neighbourhood."

An official presentation and open day was held on Friday 7 April at the Northwards Housing headquarters at Hexagon Tower in Blackley.

Northwards Housing CEO, Robin Lawler and tenant Board member, Joan Fitzgerald presented Billy and his school with the winning mouse mat, vouchers for First Sport and a £50 cheque. The runner ups in the competition, Mount Carmel primary school and St Augustine's primary school also received £50 each.
