A brand new team of green-fingered guardians has been put together in Cheetham to bring the district’s beauty into blossom.
The Cheetham Hill Environmental Team (CHET) is a ‘rapid response service’ set up to tackle the area’s environmental needs; cleaning untidy spots, bringing neglected green spaces back up to scratch and looking after the parts that are already bloomin’ brilliant.
One place that’s already benefited from CHET’s hard work is St John’s Church on Waterloo Road, where the team has cleared the overgrown churchyard and now visits each month to maintain the site.
Reverend Daniel Burton from the Church said: “The team has made a massive difference to us. They’ve transformed the way the church looks. If your building looks attractive, people respect it much more, which helps us deal with litter and even the problem of people using the area for drug abuse.”
The team has been created by a partnership of eight social housing providers, including Northwards. Managed by the environmental charity Groundwork, CHET is made up of five eco-friendly fellows employed through the Future Jobs Fund, which offers work, work experience or training to 18-24-year-olds across the country.
Claire Tyrrell, Northwards’ Head of Neighbourhood Services for the Wilton Area said: “We’re very pleased to be part of this useful initiative. The team are enthusiastic and working very hard to improve the environment in Cheetham Hill, as well as learning new skills which will help them find permanent employment.”
The other social housing providers behind CHET are Adactus Housing Association, Arawak Walton, Great Places, Guinness Northern Counties, Johnnie Johnson, Places for People and Tung Sing.
If you are a tenant in the district and have a suggestion for some work that the team might be able to do, please contact us on 03000 123 123 between 8am - 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.
