How to pay your rent

There are eight ways to pay your rent . . .

1. on-line

Use your bank debit card or credit card to pay over the internet. This service is run by Manchester City Council. Simply fill in the City Council's on-line payment form. The money will go into your rent account within two working days. You can pay council tax, insurance and other council bills this way too!

2. by standing order

This is probably the best way to pay. The money goes in straightaway, and there's no danger you'll forget to pay! We have a simple form for you to print out, fill in and send to your bank. Go to standing order form. You'll need to put your tenancy reference number (it's on your rent card). If you can't print out the form, or need advice, contact us.

3. by phone

This service is run by the City Council. Phone 0161 273 5270 to pay by bank debit card or credit card using the automated service - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Have your tenancy reference number handy and follow the step-by-step instructions. If you can't use an automated telephone service, phone 03000 123 123 during normal office hours.

4. by telebanking

Ask your bank about this handy way to pay. You'll need our sort code 20-55-41, account number 53348075, and your tenancy reference number from your rent card.

5. at the post office

Use your rent card to pay at any post office. Pay by cash or cheque. It's a free service. Find your nearest post office (external site).

6. by post

Send a cheque (made out to Manchester City Council) to: Rent Team, Northwards Housing, 549 Cheetham Hill Road, M8 9NW. Write your name, address and tenancy reference number on the back of the cheque. Don't send cash through the post!

7. at a paypoint

Look out for the purple Paypoint sign at your local shop, newsagent or petrol station. Use your rent card and pay with cash. It's a free, convenient and private service - shop staff won't see details of your rent account. Please keep your receipt. Find your nearest paypoint (external site).

8. at a housing office

Our local housing offices only take payments for a few hours a week - so it's much better to pay rent conveniently using one of the other methods. But if you want to pay at a housing office find out addresses and opening times.

However you pay, please keep the receipt or reference number we give you.
