If you would like to move in to one of our properties, whether you are new or already a Northwards tenant, you must register with the Manchester Move website and use it to apply for our vacancies. This is called “bidding.”
We have 13,426 properties across north Manchester. Each year, a small number of these become available to rent. In 2014, only 956 of our homes became available for brand new tenants, so there’s a lot of competition.
- How long will I have to wait to get the kind of home I want?
How successful your bids are depends on a few different things:
- What kind of property you are after - certain types of home are in high demand, or can only be offered to people in certain circumstances.
- Where you are happy to live - certain areas are very popular, so they get a lot of people bidding for homes there and rarely have vacancies.
- How long you have been waiting
- Your Rehousing Band
What is a Rehousing Band?
As the properties we manage are owned by Manchester City Council, we must follow their rehousing rules when we let a property. These rules control what kind of home we are allowed to offer you. How urgently you need a council property is also worked out using these rules.
After registering for a home, you are put into one of six rehousing bands based on these rules: Band 1 is the most urgent, Band 6 is the least.
The closer to Band 1 you are, the more likely it is you will be offered a home. Being closer to Band 6 doesn’t mean you will never be offered a home – it just means that we cannot offer you certain properties and you will have to wait longer to be offered others.
- How can I move quicker?
The simple answer is you are much more likely to be offered a home if you bid for a few different types of property in a few different areas.
However, if you want to be smart about how you bid, take a look at our homes to see which properties became available to rent in 2014. This will give you a better idea of the types of properties and areas that are more often available for you to bid on.
Properties like high rise flats are in less demand. This makes them a great option if you want to move quickly.
You may be able to move faster if you exchange your home
You could move much more quickly by swapping your home with another tenant. Find out about exchanging your home.
- I'm being made homeless - can you help?
If you are being made homeless and would like to move into a Northwards property, you must still use the Manchester Move website to bid for our homes.
Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing how long it may be before one of your bids is successful, so you may be best contacting Manchester City Council's homelessness service. They may be able to help you with accomodation while you bid.
- How long do I have to wait before I can start bidding?
After you've registered with Manchester Move, you may be asked to provide more information.
Once you've given all the information needed, it can take up to five weeks to process your application.
Once it's done, you will receive a letter telling you your rehousing application number and rehousing band. You can then start bidding for homes on Manchester Move.
