Empty Northwards homes
When a home becomes empty
When a tenant tells us they're leaving, we try to find someone
who'll move in the same day they move out.
We start looking for new tenants and actively market the property
even before it's empty. That's why you must tell us four weeks before
you plan to move out of your council home.
When a home becomes empty we:
- Visit within 24 hours of getting the keys to check what needs
doing and order any repairs.
- Offer the home to a new tenant on the same day. We give people
three days to respond. If they refuse the home, we offer it to
someone else on the same day.
- Make it secure if necessary to reduce the risk of crime and
vandalism. Where possible the security will be environmentally
friendly, and not be an eyesore or draw attention to the empty home.
