Safeguarding Children: the Northwards approach

See other pages

Do you prefer to talk to us at Northwards rather than one of the specialist agencies listed on the safeguarding children introduction page?

If so, contact us as soon as you can. We will:

  • try to speak to you immediately
  • make you feel safe and give you as much support as we can
  • talk to you in a private room, and give you the choice of talking to a male or female staff member when possible
  • offer translation or an interpreter
Telling other agencies

Everyone has a part to play in keeping children safe – including us. Child abuse cases in the past have been missed because organisations haven’t shared information. We have a responsibility with other organisations to get the best outcome for children and young people.

So if you tell us about a child who is, or may be, in danger we must report the case to specialist children’s agencies straightaway. They will:

  • take emergency action if necessary to make sure the child or young person is safe, and understands their right to be safe
  • help children understand they’re not to blame for the abuse and shouldn’t be afraid to report it
The Northwards policy

We will accurately record our concerns and share this information with other agencies that are working with the child and/or the family. We will work with other specialist services to help children rebuild their lives and to stop the abuse happening again. See our policy in detail:

Common Assesment Framework (CAF) for Children and Young People

The Common Assessment Framework (or CAF) is a new way of working with children and young people. It involves listening to you and your child to find out your child’s needs, and what is working well in your child’s life.
