Domestic abuse

What to do in an emergency

If there is an immediate threat of violence:

  • phone 999, or get somebody else to phone immediately
  • move to a safe place, try to avoid the kitchen and stay near a door.
  • if you can, get out!
Thinking ahead

If your situation is not an immediate emergency, but it might become one, keep these things in a safe place where you can find them easily:

  • telephone numbers of family or friends, and other useful contacts
  • cash for taxi, bus or train
  • spare keys for house or car
  • change of clothes for you and anybody else that may leave with you
  • essential documents such as passport and bank details
  • a plan of where to go and how to get there
  • essential things; medicine for example
