We’re putting almost 1,400 solar photo-voltaic panels on some of our homes.

The £5m scheme will make our homes greener and warmer, and help tenants reduce their energy bills.

But we have to be quick – we’re in a race against time to get them installed by the New Year. The Government is planning to change the rules on green subsidies, which means we’ll have to install the panels by 1 January to make the costs stack up.

Race against time

Steve Kirkham, our head of green energy, said: "Our tenants are experiencing the toughest economic and welfare challenges for a generation. One in five are suffering from fuel poverty, and so it is vital that we help them reduce their energy bills as much as we can.

"This is a challenging programme given the short time that we have to deliver it in, and the project teams and contractors involved have done a fantastic job to get this scheme off the ground.

"The panels will make a real difference to tenants’ energy bills as the price of electricity continues to go up. The scheme will also go some way to helping meet Greater Manchester’s regional green targets.

"Alongside the £21m of home improvements we’re carrying out this year, we’re also really pleased that we’re able to help over a thousand tenants by installing solar panels."

Tenants who might be eligible for the scheme are receiving letters informing them about the plans.
