See how some of Manchester’s pluckiest pensioners keep busy and beat loneliness.

According to Age UK, more than a million older people say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member.

Around 3,500 of our tenants are over 65, so we’ve launched a new campaign called ‘Retired Not Expired’ to inspire those who may be feeling lonely to try something new.

We asked some older tenants how they keep busy and their responses were unusual and inspirational:

Jim (pictured above with his friend Elaine) attends valuing older people events and is a member of ‘Out in The City’, a support group for older LGBT people.

He also attends a weekly knitting club.

He said: “We have a lovely time; everyone leaves feeling happy and smiling.

Some men my age raise an eyebrow when they find out I knit, but it doesn’t bother me.”

Come together

We’re working on a series of activities to bring older people together to get to know each other and learn new skills.
